Coffee & Tobacco

In 2012, I became deeply immersed in art studies. At the apartment where I lived in Hamburg, Germany, I had five studios. I believe having multiple spaces is important, because with five studios you work five times more, and you also feel the enormous need to bring each one of them to life. This is the Matris studio, where I work whenever I am in Germany.

The curious and somewhat strange thing is that in each studio, different works emerge. I always need a very particular mood for artistic creation, which for me requires absolute silence. In the act of creation, there is a profound sense of modesty—I work as if hidden, which is why I prefer to do it in the very early hours of the morning. I wake up early and enter the studio before any interruptions arise. If I sense someone’s presence, I simply cannot create. That is why I don’t allow even my family to enter the studio while I’m working. For me, work, production, and creation are almost acts of modesty, even tinged with shame.

At all times, in every studio, I always have with me a cup of Starbucks coffee. From this habit, the idea was born to create a series of works around the theme “Coffee and Tobacco.” I envisioned presenting the project to Starbucks, with the hope of collaborating together. The titles of the works are inspired by the different flavors and varieties of coffee they offer. Tobacco, meanwhile, adds a special touch to my deepest passions.
